What is IPSec (Internet Protocol Security)?

Internet Protocol Security (IPSec) is a robust framework of open standards developed to ensure secure communication over IP networks. It operates at the network layer, protecting and authenticating IP packets as they travel between hosts, gateways, or networks. IPSec encompasses two primary protocols – Authentication Header (AH) and Encapsulating Security Payload (ESP). AH ensures data integrity and authentication, while ESP provides confidentiality through encryption. IPSec can function in two modes, transport mode (for end-to-end communication between hosts) and tunnel mode (used in VPNs to secure communication between networks). It supports multiple encryption and hashing algorithms, making it adaptable to varying security requirements.

In VoIP Systems, IPSec is often employed to safeguard signaling and media streams, especially in enterprise and government-grade deployments. It helps prevent eavesdropping, data tampering, and IP spoofing. While more modern VoIP environments may favor TLS and SRTP for media and signaling encryption, IPSec remains a vital option in scenarios demanding full-stack encryption or where compliance mandates its use. Its ability to seamlessly integrate into existing IP infrastructures while maintaining high levels of security makes IPSec an enduring choice in network protection strategies.
