What is DTMF?

DTMF (Dual-Tone Multi-Frequency) is the tone-based signaling system used when you press numbers on a phone keypad. Each time a key is pressed, it produces a distinct pair of tones that the VoIP system can recognize and decode. DTMF is essential for navigating phone menus, entering PIN codes, accessing voicemail, or confirming selections in IVR (Interactive Voice Response) systems. In VoIP, DTMF can be transmitted in different ways—like in-band (within the audio), out-of-band (RFC 2833), or SIP INFO. Choosing the right method depends on your VoIP provider and hardware. If DTMF isn’t transmitted correctly, users may experience failed menu selections or unresponsive inputs. Ensuring reliable DTMF signaling is key to a smooth customer experience and successful interaction with automated systems.
