What is Weighted Call Distribution?

Weighted Call Distribution (WCD) is a call routing strategy that assigns incoming calls based on predefined weights assigned to agents or endpoints.

Weighted Call Distribution ensures that incoming calls are allocated not just evenly, but according to a specific weighting logic tailored to business priorities.

Each agent, group, or queue is assigned a weight value that influences the likelihood of receiving a call.

For instance, a senior agent with a higher success rate might receive more calls than a trainee. WCD is especially beneficial in contact centres, sales teams, and support environments where agent expertise, availability, or performance must guide call routing.

Unlike round-robin or idle-agent-first strategies, WCD allows businesses to apply strategic rules that reflect staffing structure or customer importance.

The weights can be static or dynamically adjusted based on factors like agent workload, historical performance, or business hours.

Many modern PBX and VoIP systems offer WCD configuration through admin dashboards or API controls. It also complements skills-based routing, adding another layer of precision to call distribution logic.

When implemented effectively, Weighted Call Distribution improves first-call resolution rates, optimises agent productivity, and enhances customer satisfaction by matching calls to the most appropriate recipients.
