What is Push to Talk (PTT)?

Push to Talk is a method of communication where users press a button to speak and release it to listen, commonly used in two-way radios and walkie-talkies.

In the VoIP world, PTT is implemented in specialized apps or devices designed for real-time, half-duplex voice communication. Industries like security, transportation, and construction use PTT for its simplicity and immediacy. Unlike full-duplex VoIP calls, where both parties can speak simultaneously, PTT ensures one speaker at a time, reducing channel contention and improving clarity in noisy environments. VoIP PTT solutions leverage Wi-Fi or cellular networks, making them more scalable and geographically flexible than traditional radio systems. Features like group calling, priority override, and location tracking are often built into PTT platforms. Because it requires minimal bandwidth and infrastructure, VoIP PTT is a cost-effective alternative to traditional mobile radio communications, especially in fleet and field operations.
