What is Proxy Server?

A proxy server in VoIP acts as an intermediary between clients and servers, facilitating SIP signaling and improving security, routing, and load distribution.

In SIP-based systems, a proxy server handles tasks such as registering endpoints, forwarding INVITE requests, and authenticating users. It does not usually process RTP media, which flows directly between endpoints, unless configured otherwise. Proxy servers also help enforce policies like call permissions, routing logic, or geographic restrictions. They can be used to hide internal network details, enhancing security and privacy. In high-availability setups, proxy servers are crucial for redundancy and failover management. Additionally, in multi-tenant environments, they allow providers to handle numerous clients efficiently. When placed strategically, SIP proxies can reduce latency, improve call completion rates, and centralize control over signaling traffic.
