What is PoE (Power over Ethernet)?

PoE is a technology that delivers electrical power over Ethernet cables, allowing devices like IP phones to receive both data and power through a single connection.

PoE simplifies VoIP deployment by eliminating the need for separate power adapters or outlets near each phone. This is particularly advantageous in large-scale office environments, conference rooms, and wall-mounted installations. PoE switches or PoE injectors supply the power, and compliant devices – like VoIP phones, cameras, or wireless access points – draw it. There are several standards (IEEE 802.3af, 802.3at, 802.3bt) defining voltage and wattage levels, so compatibility is key. Beyond convenience, PoE enhances network reliability – especially when paired with an uninterruptible power supply (UPS), allowing phones to remain operational during power outages. From a network design perspective, PoE enables clean cable management and centralized control over powering devices, making it a preferred choice for modern IP-based communication systems.
