What is Outbound Call?

An outbound call is a telephone call initiated from a user or system to an external number. It’s the opposite of an inbound call, which originates externally.

In VoIP systems, outbound calls are routed through SIP trunks, VoIP gateways, or PSTN interfaces. These calls may be initiated manually (by a user) or automatically (by dialers in call centers). Proper configuration of the dial plan, caller ID, codecs, and routing rules is crucial to ensure successful call completion. Outbound call handling often involves logic such as least-cost routing, which selects the most economical path for a given destination. Security is another concern – if outbound routes are not properly secured, unauthorized users may exploit them for toll fraud. In corporate settings, outbound call reports are used to track agent productivity and sales performance. VoIP platforms also support outbound call automation via APIs, enabling services like appointment reminders, marketing campaigns, or emergency alerts. Ultimately, outbound call configuration defines how efficiently and securely a VoIP system interacts with the outside world.
