The LoA plays a pivotal role in the number porting process within VoIP and telecom services. When a customer wants to switch service providers while retaining their existing phone number, they must submit a Letter of Authorization to the new carrier. This document confirms that the customer consents to the transfer and provides proof of ownership for the number(s) involved. It generally includes the account holder’s name, billing address, account number, and the phone number to be ported. Regulatory bodies often require this document to ensure the porting process is legitimate and fraud-free.
Without an LoA, the current carrier has the right to reject the port request. In business communications, especially when managing multiple DID numbers across regions, a properly executed LoA is essential to maintain service continuity and prevent operational disruptions. As VoIP becomes more global and flexible, the LoA remains a foundational element of lawful and transparent number management.
